Job purpose:
The Health & Safety Manager ensures health and safety compliance across construction projects by providing guidance, conducting site inspections, addressing non-conformances, and managing permits. It involves coordinating with stakeholders, reviewing risk assessments, investigating incidents, and supporting project setups. The role also drives safety initiatives, delivers training, and promotes continuous improvement of safety standards.
What we’re looking for in a nutshell:
We’re keen to see applications from candidates with a health and safety background who hold, as a minimum, NEBOSH General and Construction Certificates and are working towards a Level 6 qualification (NCRQ or NVQ). Applicants should be at least Tech IOSH, ideally working towards Cert IOSH or CMIOSH, with a proven track record of working in an advisory capacity within construction and building environments. The role is diverse, covering everything from demolition and groundworks to working at height, so we’re keen to hear from all-rounders with hands-on experience in construction environments, ideally with client-side exposure. The ability to adapt to a variety of construction site settings and challenges is key.
Current SMSTS certification and a valid CSCS card are essential, along with experience in managing health and safety across multiple high-risk construction sites and applying CDM Regulations across a variety of projects. A full driving license and access to a car would be beneficial, but not essential. Experience with Temporary Works management is essential, while demolition, groundworks, H&S auditing, and Asbestos P405 certification would be advantageous.

What you’ll be doing:
- Providing practical guidance, monitoring, and ensuring basic legal compliance
- Collaborating with the Head of Health and Safety for necessary advice and support.
- Undertake regular inspections of projects onsite, to include working practises, site setup, site security & procedures.
- Highlight non conformance to the relevant site teams / project managers and ensure actions are closed out in a reasonable timeframe.
- Coordination with permit issuers to ensure that they are being appropriately monitored and that RAMS are being followed
- Issue permits for working at height / roof access / hot works to contractors undertaking work
- Liaise with onsite projects team to coordinate laydown areas, construction boundaries and public realm activities.
- Review construction related RAMS to ensure compliance with regulation 3 (a) (b) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
- Attend design team / pre-start / progress meetings where requested,to ensure cooperation between all parties and to advise on compliance with regulations.
- Identify, with the design team, any foreseeable hazards which might affect the health, safety and welfare of those involved in the project.
- Advise if the project is notifiable, and where applicable, ensure that the F10 notification to the Health and Safety Executive is issued.
- Work with the client / PD to liaise with the principal contractor throughout the project to ensure design and temporary works design is co-ordinated.
- Work with the client to complete a pre-qualification of the principal contractor if required.
- Assist the client in the review of the construction phase health and safety plan and offer advice on its suitability.
- Advise the client of the suitability of welfare arrangements on site and ensure compliance with the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
- Undertake accident investigations and issue the associated reports to senior management.
- Support the Bruntwood Construction team in establishing / setting up the construction site as Principal Contractor on self delivery projects.
- Support the Bruntwood Construction team in setting up as Principal Designer on self delivery projects and advising on the organizational capability required.
- Assist with the submission of RIDDOR reporting, F2508 to HSE if required.
- Chair Contractor H+S Manager forums.
- Attend Bruntwood Group H+S Manager forums.
- Provide awareness training and CPD sessions to building surveyors / Project managers
- Drive any internal initiatives across the Bruntwood group.
