You'll be based at our Union office, opposite the town hall in the centre of Manchester. 

The team you’ll join: 

You’ll join a team of experts across our People & Talent function which includes; generalist people experts, talent development and acquisition, culture and engagement, colleague communications, and future talent.

Job purpose:

As Learning & Development Manager you will make sure that we create an environment where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. You will develop, design and deliver the best possible learning and development interventions to our colleagues through gaining a deep understanding of our business and teams. 

What we’re looking for in a nutshell:

We’re keen to see applications from candidates with experience as a Learning and Development (L&D) Partner or Manager, ideally in businesses of a similar size or complexity, though we’re open to candidates from smaller organisations if you have experience of leading on L&D throughout the full lifecycle. The ideal candidate will have broad L&D expertise and be able to think strategically whilst being a real hands-on member of the team. Essential skills include stakeholder management, relationship building, and the ability to challenge and approach situations curiously and proactively. A solid grasp of team dynamics and experience designing and running development programs are also key.

We value tech-savvy professionals who can integrate technology effectively into a blended learning approach. Using your broad L&D experience, you’ll understand multiple learning styles and needs, and be able to thrive in a fast-changing environment. We’re looking for someone who is organised and able to manage several projects at once. Management experience would be beneficial, as this role will involve line managing our Digital Learning Specialist. L&D Level 5 CIPD certification is a plus, though proven L&D experience is equally valued.

What you’ll be doing

  • Work with the wider People & Talent Team and stakeholders in the business to to understand skills gaps and strategic objectives.
  • Deliver divisional talent development plans and learning solutions that will build people capability, manage talent and accelerate organisational and team performance.
  • Lead on any organisation wide or central learning projects which arise, as well as identifying gaps and making recommendations for new initiatives.
  • Innovate, bring fresh thinking on learning, learner experience, and topics such as leadership, manager development, performance and talent management and playback to business leaders and the People & Talent team to support the ongoing development of functional people plans.
  • Manage third party suppliers, ensuring that brand experience and impact are at the forefront of any solution we deliver.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of learning solutions, working closely with central analytics within the L&D team.
  • Lead functional Learning & Development projects and initiatives.
  • Make sure every touchpoint of our talent development process is inclusive and offers equal opportunities to all colleagues, as well as develop specific development programmes to open up wider opportunities.
  • Design and deliver management development programmes in conjunction with external partners, to make sure we have capable and inspirational managers across the business.
  • Lead strategic skills gap analysis exercises and equip People Partners to implement their own in their business areas, and make recommendations on learning interventions to fill gaps.
  • Deliver training and workshops both within teams and across the wider business to shape our culture of learning
  • Be a guardian of the Learning and Development service, continuously looking to improve our effectiveness through process and policy.
